New Outdoor Gear for 2001:

TENTS

Camping will be cozier this spring and summer in a wide assortment of comfortable, yet portable tents that endure all climates. Several offer open or window tops for stargazing. All were designed for convenience and ease of setting up.

Coleman. Coleman displayed seven models of their new Exponent line designed to meet a wide variety of remote camping needs. Four are lightweight and compact, suitable for backpacking and other trekking excursions, while three larger models are well suited for base situations. They announced an innovative feature for connecting tent poles to the tent floor structure in four of their backpacking models. Its called Pole Talon and Jim Reid, Coleman P-R, says its stronger, more reliable and more user-friendly than most other pole designs.

Eureka. One of my favorite tents at the show was Eureka's Stargazer tent. One thing that has always bothered me about sleeping in a tent was not being able to see the stars and the moon. In-fact when I can get away with it, I just lay my sleeping bag on a pad in the open. The Stargazer tent now provides protection from the elements and still lets you see the sky. A pull toggle-string hangs down from the inside center of the tent that you can pull or release a portion of the top of the tent. A see through mesh keeps the bugs out but lets you see the sky… it also provides more ventilation. If it starts to rain just release the toggle and you're covered. Two person Stargazer tents retail for around $179, 4-person $279 and 6-person $399. If you're not a sky gazer, Eureka has a large selection including the Boy Scout style, two-season and three-season backpack tents.

Sierra Designs. Sierra Designs introduced the lightest tent on the market last year; this year they introduced an exclusive new technology that makes their already strong tents at least 40% stronger. By introducing Arch Support Technology (AST) Sierra Designs increased a tent's ability to withstand high winds. All their four-season tents feature Jakes Corner, a patent-pending innovation available only from Sierra Designs. Jake's Corner is a fully removable structural element that strengthens and supports the long pole arches and eliminates pole rotation that often leads to failure in high winds. Sierra also introduced a new Stash Door that eliminates the old drop door versus d-door openings. The Stash Door can be quickly tucked out of the way where it stays clean, dry and accessible.
