STEP OUTSIDE to Recover From the Attack on America
By Sharon Rushton, Teen Adventure editor

As we grieve and try to recover from the recent attack on America, we must use our love of the outdoors to help heal our hearts. Wetting a line at your favorite fishing hole, paddling a canoe down a majestic river, hiking through the changing leaves of a mountain trail, sitting on the back of a horse as it gallops through a meadow can provide our minds a chance to sort our feelings. Outdoor activities also provide us a wonderful way to spend quality time with friends and family and to talk things out with each other.

The settings of the natural world help to ground our thoughts, to think love instead of hate, to think justice not revenge, and to face fear with courage.

The events have caused each of us to experience different emotions. Sadness and compassion for those families who lost love ones, anger toward those responsible, confusion for why they would do such horrible acts against innocent people, respect for those who risked their lives to rescue others, and an enhanced sense of love for one another.

Another emotion we feel is fear for what will happen next. Most of us who pursue outdoor activities have had to face our fear at one time or another, so we are more prepared than most Americans. We understand that we must recognize our fear, stand up to it in a responsible (not reckless) manner, and not let fear control our lives and/or keep us from living our lives.

If you know people at school who are having a hard time moving forward, invite them to STEP OUTSIDE with you. None of us will ever forget what happened this past week, but do not let it destroy additional lives through fear, depression, or hatred. Take your friends fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, horse back riding, etc. You’ll provide them support, a friend to talk with, and an activity to release stress. Talk to your friends about how you’ve faced fear, whether it was the first time you got on a ski lift, or faced your first river rapid, or got lost in the woods. Tell them how, once you reached down for that courage, that you felt better about yourself. And when you greeted falling down with getting back up, tipping over in a canoe with continuing on, and falling off a horse with immediately getting back on it made your stronger. Of course, there are many types of fear, some more difficult to face than others. However, the same process applies for each.

These events also remind us how we should not waste one day we have here on earth. We should remember to tell those we love how we feel everyday. We should never stop learning because knowledge is authentic power. And we should take time to enjoy those things that are important to us, such as outdoor activities.

I’m proud how America has pulled together, to show our patriotism, to show our love and support for one another. We can all be part of keeping America strong. Starting at school, we can cast aside our petty differences and show unity. If we work together we can grow stronger as individuals, as a community and as a country.

If you would like to discuss your feelings, or provide other students your thoughts on how to move forward, go to the message board.
