Youth Wildlife Art Contest
   By Teen Adventure

How’s your artistic talent? Are you good at drawing animals? If so, take a look at this contest. You could win up to $200. The 2001 Youth Wildlife Art Contest, the 14th in the annual series, is open to grades one through 12 (public, private, or home-schooled). It’s sponsored by the National Rifle Association (NRA). NRA membership is not required. A summary or contest rules follows:

Entries may be submitted in one of four categories based on school grade, as follows: Category I, grades 1-3; Category II, grades 4-6; Category III, grades 7-9; and Category IV, grades 10-12.

Entries may portray any North American game bird or animal that may be legally hunted or trapped. Endangered species, fish, and non-game animals are not eligible subjects. Anyone uncertain whether a species they wish to enter is allowable may call (703) 267-1595 for clarification. Contestants are limited to one entry. Artwork may be either color or black and white, and done in a medium of the artist's choice (pencil, pen and ink, oil, water color, pastel, etc.). Submissions should be on good quality bond or drawing paper, or on illustration board. Preferred paper sizes are 8½" x 11" or 11" x 14".

Composition must be original. Photographs may be used, but only for reference. Artwork determined to have been traced from an existing photo or illustration will be disqualified.

Entries must be postmarked not later than October 10, 2001. Each must be accompanied by a brief statement signed by the student's parent, guardian or teacher, attesting that the work is original and verifying the artist's grade level as of October 10, 2001. (Teachers who make the contest a class project may sign one statement that applies to all entries from the class.) In addition, the artist's name, home address, phone number, age, and grade must be written on the back of the entry or on a note attached to the entry.

Entries will be judged on effort, creativity, anatomical accuracy, and composition.

First-place winners in each category will receive $200, second- and third-place winners will receive $100 and $50 respectively, and honorable mention winners will receive $25.

Send entries to: NRA Youth Wildlife Art Contest, 11250 Waples Mill Rd., Fairfax, VA 22030. Entries will be returned only if accompanied by a stamped, self-addressed envelope. NRA assumes no responsibility for lost or damaged artwork. NRA reserves all rights to reproduce entries. Children of NRA staff members are not eligible to enter.
