National Fishing & Boating Week
   By Teen Adventure

The first ever National Fishing and Boating Week takes place from June 1-10 and Teen Adventure encourages everyone to take advantage of the opportunities the week offers. Many state fish and wildlife agencies offer a free fishing day during the week and hundreds of local events are planned in communities across the country. Get together with friends and/or your family to share fun and quality time while learning about or enjoying two of our nation’s favorite pastimes – recreational fishing and boating.

“We hope teens will shut down their computers, turn off their televisions and rediscover how recreational boating and fishing offer meaningful, quality time to re-connect with friends, family and the environment. You’ll also find its hard not to relax when you are on the water,” says Bruce Matthews, president of the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation.

Many teens find it challenging when it comes to spending time together with their family. Parents are overworked, teens are overscheduled and quality family time is a rare commodity. Did you know?

· Youth playtime has declined by 25% · Unstructured youth outdoor activities have declined by 50% · Family vacations have decreased by 28% · Family dinners have decreased by 33%

You can be a positive influence in helping to bring your family together by planning a fishing and/or boating outing. “Fishing and boating are favorite pastimes that promote family values and cohesiveness and are unmatched activities for true connection with family, friends and the natural environment,” says Matthews. There is no better time to learn more about fishing and boating and experience these benefits first hand than during National Fishing and Boating Week.

Events are planned for families and include fishing and boating festivals, educational events, and hands-on activities. You normally need a fishing license to fish, but many states offer a day or two to give fishing a try without a license. It’s a great time to get a group of friends or family, cast your line, and discover the wonders that spending time around water brings. See Free Fishing Days under “features” for a by state. Check out www.nationalfishingandboatingweek.org for a list of free fishing days and a list of events.
